for christmas

i send you this secret
i am forever changed
i write it down like a poem
i am forever changed
i wrap it in silver paper
i am forever changed
i weave a red ribbon bow

this morning karl isaac sits bolt upright
as if by command when i wake him
it reminds me of those haunted houses
as a child you know the scary assed guy
in the coffin who makes all the girls scream
today is a school day and just when
i think hes gone back to sleep he bursts
into our bedroom and pounces like a cat
onto the bed next to me while i write.
